It was 25 years ago today that two planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City. I was in my office in Orem that morning and one of my coworkers popped in to tell me about the unfolding story. He thought I would be particularly interested because I was studying to become a commercial pilot at the time. So we went into the break room to get the story on TV. And there we stayed, glued for over an hour, riveted and sickened.

It’s not the planes or the buildings I remember. It’s the images of real people leaping from buildings because that was the better alternative. It’s the masses evacuating the scene as the structures collapsed, and the hopeless look on the faces of the first responders on the ground. Gives me chills to think about it. Hope to never experience anything like that again.

So today I find myself not caring so much that the Fed is going to raise interest rates next week. The unhinged spending, unbalanced budget, and rising deficit that causes clashes are cursory. The political posturing that so easily gets under my skin, irrelevant. I woke up this morning feeling proud that we, the United States of America, are the guardians of good in this world. We fight oppression. We alleviate suffering. We facilitate peace. God bless America.
